LOSS PREVENTION
Fire Extinguishers
Extinguishers are needed wherever there is a
danger to life or property. This is no exception
for farm equipment and farm buildings which are
high risk areas for serious fires.
It is important for you to select the proper
fire extinguisher based on the type of fires you
could expect to occur. Using the wrong type of
extinguisher could turn a small blaze into a major
catastrophe.
Types of fires:
- Class A: ordinary combustibles or fibrous
material, such as wood, cloth, rubber and some
plastics.
- Class B: flammable or combustible liquids,
such as, gasoline, acetone, thinners, and kerosene.
- Class C: energized electrical fires, such
as appliances, switches, panel boxes and power
tools.
- Class D: combustible metals, such as magnesium,
titanium and sodium. These fires react violently
with water or other chemicals, and must be handled
with care.
For most farms and ranches, the ABC type extinguisher
will provide the best protection.
Maintenance on an extinguisher should be done
on a yearly basis by a professional but you should
check each month:
- Safety pin, nozzle and nameplate are intact
- Extinguisher is full and charged
Knowing the location of the fire extinguishers
is also key. Each one should be mounted on a wall
in plain view.
The appropriate type of extinguisher and it's
location have been covered, now how do you use
a fire extinguisher?
Just remember these steps:
Pull the pin. This unlocks the operating
handle.
Aim the extinguisher at the base of the
fire.
Squeeze the trigger while holding the
extinguisher upright.
Sweep the area from side to side
Fires occur everywhere but on a farm it creates
unique perils for animals, the equipment and the
owners. Please help to keep yourself safe from
fires by utilizing these helpful tips.
